Q: Please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Upon graduation, I was living in a very small town with limited career options for people in the creative field. I had been involved in cheerleading my entire life, so I decided to start sending out resumes to competition and event photography companies. One of those companies contacted me but they were looking for an event coordinator, not a designer or photographer. They knew I didn’t have experience in that area, but after a great interview, they decided to take a chance on me. I worked in that role for two years, and eventually morphed into the company’s graphic designer after the person in that position left the company.

I’ve been working in the creative field ever since. I started freelancing for an Atlanta based publishing company. When their creative director left, I was asked to relocate and join the company full-time. A few years later, I was recruited by an advertising partner to help them establish their brand in the cheer & dance industry. Unfortunately, that company stumbled on financial trouble and I was laid off.

Up until that point, I’ve been extremely lucky in my career. Most of my opportunities have come to me through networking. I’ve always marketed myself as more than just a graphic designer, and I fully contribute that to my success so far. In my previous positions, I’ve stepped up to take charge in other areas such as event planning, marketing, sales, and customer service. I love being creative, but I also really enjoy working with business operations and project management.

Q: Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, yes. My biggest struggle was figuring out where I thrive. I love structure and organization but prefer working for smaller companies and agencies where I have more power over my creativity. I tried the corporate route once but found it to be a bit too limited. It wasn’t until that experience that I learned about myself.

Q: What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success can be measured in different ways, but I feel the most successful when I design or manage a project that creates joy and happiness for the client or the viewer. If I’m able to create something that someone else loves, then I feel that I was successful.
